Captain Joseph R. Willie, II, United States Navy Reserve, is a native of Houston, Texas. He graduated from Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree in 1978. Captain Willie first affiliated with the military as a Professional Officer Cadet assigned to AFROTC Detachment 790 located at Tennessee State University in 1976. Due to a sever injury during his college tenure, his commissioning into the United States Air Force had to be deferred and he was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1978 with the rank of Airman. He was accepted into dental school upon graduation and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston in 1982. On March 20, 1985, he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserve.
Captain Willie’s first assignment was as Vice-Chief of Dental Services of the 917th Tactical Hospital located at Barksdale A.F.B., Louisiana. His additional duties were that of mobility officer and awards and decorations officer. In 1987, Captain Willie assumed the position of Chief of Dental Services. In March, 1989, Captain Willie was deployed with JTF Bravo to Soto Cano, Honduras where he served as the ADorc of the task force. In January, 1991 , Captain Willie was mobilized in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and augmented the 23d Tactical Hospital, Dental Services. He was released from active duty in April, 1991.
In May, 1991, Captain Willie received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the South Texas College of Law and was licensed by the Supreme Court of Texas in November, 1991.
In November, 1994, Captain Willie transferred and assumed the position of Chief of Dental Services of the 433d Medical Squadron located at Kelly AFB, Texas. While there, he also had the additional duty as the unit’s Resource Protection Monitor and served on the Executive Management Committee.
In 2001, Captain Willie completed an interservice transfer and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. In August, 2001, Captain Willie reported to NR NSA Southwest Asia (Bahrain), Detachment A as Executive Officer and dental officer. In October, 2002, Captain Willie reported to NR NDC Gulf Coast, Detachment B as Executive Officer and training officer. In October, 2003, Captain Willie was selected and served as the Officer-In-Charge for NR NDC Gulf Coast Detachment B.
In February, 2005, Captain Willie reported to NR OHSU Dallas, Detachment J as the AOIC and Department Head of Dental Services. In May, 2006, Captain Willie reported to NR 4MD, 1/23 Marines (-) as the Senior Dental Executive. In August, 2006, Captain Willie was selected and served as the Officer-in-Charge for Detachment 5 of the 4th Dental Company, 4th Dental Battalion. In January, 2007, Captain Willie reported as the Staff Dental Officer for NR II MEF IMA Detachment at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina. In December, 2007, Captain Willie reported to the 4th Dental Battalion as Special Staff to the Commanding Officer. In 2009, Captain Willie was selected and served as the Executive Officer for the 24th Dental Company, 4th Dental Battalion.
Captain Willie’s current billet assignment is Senior Dental Executive for NR OHSU Pensacola.
Captain Willie is a member of the National Dental Association, Gulf State Dental Association of Texas, Charles A. George Dental Society, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Naval Reserve Association, State Bar of Texas, National Bar Association, American Bar Association, American Association of Justice, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Texas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association. He also maintains a private practice of general dentistry and law in Houston, Texas.
Captain Willie’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal (2 awards), Public Health Service Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (with bronze star), Global War on Terrorism Medal, Navy Arctic Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with silver hourglass and M for mobilization), Navy Sharpshooter Rifle Medal, Navy Marksman Pistol Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon and other awards.
